RealOne Platform
Next Generation RealPlayer Combines Multiple Utilities
The successor to the version 8 series of media players offered by RealNetworks, the RealOne Platform collects the functionality of the previously separate RealPlayer, RealJukebox, and RealDownload utilities and combines them in a single product with support for multiple media file types, an enhanced performance player engine requiring less memory and CPU, and a customizable three-panel interface. Additionally, the player adds an embedded browser to the player console; allowing for the viewing/playing of digital media in one panel, the display of context-based interactive information in a second panel, and full-fledged Web browsing capabilities in the third panel.
The heart of the RealOne Platform, the RealOne Player continues to support multiple media file formats, including RealMedia (of course), MP3, and Windows Media Audio. Additionally, the plug-in based architecture pioneered by earlier RealPlayer releases continues in the new platform; providing "just-in-time" functionality by allowing the RealPlayer to identify the components/plug-ins required to play specific content and providing the surfer with the ability to automatically download and install those plug-ins as necessary.
An array of Software Developer Kits (SDKs) can be obtained by developers wishing to create their own content for display in the RealOne Player or even customize the look or functionality of the player itself. The RealSystem SDK allows for the creation of RealSystem integrated client/server applications; the RealSystem Producer SDK allows for the building of tools with the ability to convert from audio and video elements into the RealSystem file format; the skins toolkit allows for the customization of the player interface; and the RealOne Visualization SDK allows for the creation of Graphic Visualizations that are also compatible with the RealJukebox V2 and the version 8 RealPlayer.
RealOne Player also adds support for the RealVideo 9 and RealAudio Surround codecs. According to information provided by RealNetworks, these new codecs allow for near-DVD quality video w/surround sound audio transmissions at speeds as low as 500Kbps. RealVideo 9 support is also included in RealPlayer 8 for Mac and Windows; RealVideo 9 support for the UNIX and Pocket PC RealPlayers is expected soon.
New components of the RealOne platform include the RealOne Enterprise Desktop and Desktop manager; which facilitate the creation, deployment, and management of enterprise branded and customized RealOne Players for the corporate desktop.
The RealOne Player is available now in both subscription based and free versions. The free version does not include a "RealOne SuperPass" subscription, which provides users with access to premium content and music downloads for $9.95/month.
