SolidDNS

BIND Based DNS Hardware With Dual GUI Management Interfaces

The flagship offering from InfoWeapons, SolidDNS is a DNS server delivered as pre-loaded hardware. The hardware itself is loaded with the vendor's SolidOS (a hardened BSD variant), with the actual DNS operations based on BIND v9.

The vendor targets the appliance (two general versions are offered, see below) to "any size network" and notes as a key feature the ability to manage the server with minimal knowledge of DNS. Two primary management interfaces are exposed by the appliance: A Web-based interface for browser-based administration, and an MMC snap-in for Windows-based machines. Connectivity to both interfaces is protected via SSL/TLS, with client authentication leveraging x.509 certificates. In addition to these GUI interfaces, basic configuration tasks can also be performed via a serial console and a front panel LCD and push button display.

SolidDNS supports both IPv4 and IPv6 addressing simultaneously, and the appliance is now IPv6 Forum Gold Certified. Both interfaces support both address schemes, with the vendor noting that IPv6 network prefixes can automatically be renumbered. Other key features include:

- Support for virtualization; a single appliance can be used by multiple organizations/entities, with each being able to access and manage only their own data

- Support for ENUM (E.164 Number Mapping)

- The ability to automatically create reverse IP mappings

- Support for dynamic updating and TSIG

- Active Directory support

- ACL support for DNS queries

- Support for SRV records

- Support for the updating of the BIND software, the kernel, and client/server software

- DHCP Support

- Caching support

The vendor notes that DNSSEC support is supported in the next 6 months, with support intended for both recursive and authoritative servers.

SolidDNS is available in two general models. The 100 Series is served in 1U hardware, includes 1 GB of RAM, includes dual 1 Gig Ethernet NICs, and is driven by a 64-bit dual-core AMD Opteron processor; while the 200 Series boasts multiple dual- and quad-core AMD Opteron processors (w/L2 Cache), up to 128 GB of RAM, up to 4 Gig Ethernet ports, up to 4 hot-swappable SAS drives, and dual redundant power supplies. Base pricing is $7,995.

SolidDNS is available now. Contact InfoWeapons for further information.
