Inktomi Search Toolkit
Embeddable Search Technology For Developers
Inktomi's Search Toolkit is targeted primarily to independent software developers, OEMs, or in-house IT departements and allows them to incorporate search and retrieval technologies within their applications. The toolkit supports the searching of both unstructured and structured documents, and information supplied by Inktomi notes the product can recognize over 225 document formats including XML, Microsoft Office, and PDF.
The Toolkit offers native support for XML and includes its own XML repository. Documents can be added to the toolkit's index in real-time as they are submitted (dependent on the number of documents being simultaneously submitted). Unstructured documents are indexed fully and can be searched using keywords with relevance scores returned; while information submitted to the index in a structured form (i.e., information that is marked up XML) benefits from additional, targeted search queries via XPath and XQuery support. For example, a query against structured documents can retrieve the title of all documents with specific information located within a separate field; in much the same manner as a traditional RDBMS. The toolkit's XML capabilities are schema and DTD independent; developers submit documents to the toolkit by providing the document's URI.
The Search Toolkit is implemented as a separate information server and is embedded into the application via a Java API or an XML and HTTP-based socket connection. Because it is implemented as a server, the Search Toolkit operates independently of the application that accesses it; and indeed the application and the Search Toolkit can be deployed on the same or different servers, if necessary.
The Inktomi Search Toolkit is available now. Contact Inktomi or visit their Web site for further information.
