InterScan Gateway Security Appliance
Gateway-Based Anti-Virus, Anti-Spam, Anti-Spyware, More
Ternd Micro's InterScan Gateway Security Appliance (IGSA) is deployed at the network edge (behind the firewall) and provides multiple network security capabilities to the organization; including anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-spyware, anti-bot, and URL filtering functions. The Linux-based appliance is billed as complementary to an organization's existing VPN and firewall devices, and ships as a pre-configured appliance targeted to mid-sized organizations. Management is via a remotely accessible Web-based console (optional centralized management for branch deployments is also available, via the vendor's Trend Micro Control Manager).
According to the vendor, the appliance is automatically updated and scans FTP, HTTP, SMTP, and POP3 protocols for viruses, spyware, phishing threats, spam, and "botnet" attacks (preventing network client machines from becoming zombies).
Other features include a URL filter that allows for the blocking of Web sites by designated categories and according to defined schedules; and the vendor's Damage Cleanup Service that automates the cleaning of machines with detected malware and spyware infections.
The appliances are 1U in size and ship with a 3.0Ghz Intel Pentium 4 processor. Connectivity is via 3 10/100/1000 (copper) ports; while a USB (2.0) port and PCI slot provide some room for future expansion. Management is via a 10/100 or serial port.
New features in the latest release of IGSA include support for the vendor's Web and E-mail reputation protection services, which seek to assign a "reputation" to URLs--based on a lifecycle analysis of the domain--that can be used to block suspect sites; image spam protection; and data leak prevention (inbound and outbound scanning) capabilities.
Eight models of the appliance are available (license upgradeable), with pricing starting at $4,490.
