Informant, RippleTech's database logging solution, provides security for data-centric applications vulnerable to insider theft and application-layer attacks like SQL injection.

Informant uses a network-based approach to database monitoring, by monitoring both the context of a database transaction (user name, originating IP address, etc.) and the content contained within the transaction (the SQL text, data in the response, etc.) to provide visibility into production databases.

Informant builds a log of database activity, monitors these logs in real time, and provides alerts and reports that can be used for security, compliance or systems management. Customizable alerts flag hacking attempts from outside the firewall and reports detail data usage from trusted users.

Informant is available as a network appliance or as a host-based agent. According to the vendor, the network appliance provides no impact on performance, while the host-based agent provides a "small agent footprint and negligible resource utilization." Detailed traffic analysis and entire user sessions can be captured.

Informant also integrates with popular Security Information Management (SIM) platforms.
